One of my favorite websites that I visit frequently is Yelp.com. A site that promotes a large variety of places and events, focusing not only on details, but real reviews and shared personal experiences from everyday people. I am a sucker for reading reviews (I love movie reviews), and this is the site I usually visit to obtain several opinions before diving into something new. Sometimes, I can be the most indecisive person, especially when it comes to picking a place to eat. With Yelp’s helpful restaurant section, it breaks down a huge selection of food categories (Chinese, Mexican, Hawaiian – you name it) and lists restaurants based on your preferred location convenience. The Nielsen Company  just did a 5 million dollar study to see if the media elite need to address added forms of media measurement.

The whole NY TIMES recap and the NPR podcast are here but some quick highlights:

  • The average American is exposed to 61 minutes of TV ads and promotions a day
  • TV remains the dominant medium for media consumption and advertising, the study found. (Does that shock anyone - the study was done by the research dept for the TV industry?)
  • The data suggests that computer usage has supplanted radio as the second most common media activity. Print now ranks fourth.
  • Adults are exposed to screens — TVs, cellphones, even G.P.S. devices — for about 8.5 hours on any given day,
  • Researchers found that the number of minutes with media is almost identical for every age group

You know that Microsoft ad - the one with the 4 ½ year-old Asian girl (Kylie), her fish, her camera, and her PC?

Well, five times and counting I’ve been zooming through the commercials with my DVR, yet stopped and rewound just to watch that one. I know on a basic level that I’m doing this because Kylie is likely the cutest thing I’ve ever seen, and as such, she is on the shortlist of people that can brighten even my darkest mood. IMO that ad is an example of nearly perfect execution. It’s the right message, at the right time (in response to the “I’m a Mac” ads), presented in the right way (you want user-friendly? we’ve got your user friendly, and we’ll raise you a sense of just how tied into society our product really is). Jon Stewart wondered, in a much-publicized rant on The Daily Show, what the point of Twitter is. His cries echoed the desperate wonderings of tech laypeople everywhere—“WHAT the heck IS Twitter?” As Stewart puts it, “I don’t know how it works, or WHY it is.” And that’s understandable, if you are someone who is already fed up with the trend of “over-sharing.” I could see how someone like that would hear about Twitter and think, “oh no, not another website for self-involved kids to talk about what they had for lunch.” And to be fair, there are plenty of self-involved folks on the site who do believe that their friends live for minute-by-minute updates on what color underwear they’ve decided to wear that morning.

But that’s not WHY Twitter exists. The people who are really making good use of Twitter are the ones who use it to express their creative ideas and engage in real, two-way conversations with other creative people. Read the rest of this entry »

If you love pretty things, shiny things, soft things, colors, the perfect placement of objects, dwellings, detail, small treasures, warm vanilla smells and happy feelings – you love Anthropologie as I do. A journey inside this retail heaven, can take me from a marginal day to an escape to a magical land, where everyone has good fashion, proper etiquette, cute furnishings and glasses of champagne. I always try to limit my shopping time, but my friend convinces me that it is acceptable because we are there for “inspiration”. Read the rest of this entry »

Eric Schmidt CEO of Google sat down last week with Charlie Rose for a 1-1 interview about Google. Some of the insights that he spoke to are off the charts, especially the goal of “making all the information in the world, every piece of knowledge, accessible and useful to EVERYONE.”

What is valuable to me doesn’t always have value to you – or does it?

Value can be skewed so many different ways, monetary being the primary. But in this case, ‘ take value as it relates to time and tools. Time is infinite. And tools have been around since the dawn of humankind. Most tools make the work being done, easier, more efficient, and they minimize labor.

In July of 2006, I received a rare opportunity to participate in a very special music video project for the Black Eyed Peas. The group consists of members Will.I.Am., Apl.De.Ap., Taboo and Fergie, who are known for their pop/dance oriented style of hip-hop music and have sold over 24 million albums and singles worldwide. As I continue to promote and meet with brands about treading in the Social Space, the conversation inevitably always swings to Metrics and ROI! And I understand why: People want to know what the hell they are getting for the money and someone needs to be accountable for that spend. It’s pretty cut and dry if you look at it from the client’s POV…. Read the rest of this entry »

Placing Media as a standalone offering is like winking at a girl in the dark. She will never see it happening so why even do it?!

In today’s world, it is rarely the case that a client dumps all of their money into one medium (ie Broadcast or print) and then their message is sprayed and they pray that it reaches the right demographic so that the desired goal is met. The world doesn’t work like that, nor do people consume media in that manner anymore. Read the rest of this entry »
